Yeah I know… Here I am “online” writing this post at a quarter past 11 on a Sunday night. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the type of guy who preaches about closing your Facebook account and going to live on a deserted island somewhere, but let’s face it, we’re so “connected” to our digital life that sometimes being able to “disconnect” feels like a luxury.
For the most part, even though I consider myself as a “Tech Guy”, this is why I instantaneously fell in love with the idea of creating an “unconnected” wearable device. There was something genuine about it.
When the smartwatch came out a few years ago, I didn’t really like the idea, and I still don’t like it today. I think smartphones are already intrusive enough in our lives, constantly reminding us of all the things we have to do, the things we didn’t do, the people who liked our posts, the ones who didn’t, etc… Having a device, tight on my wrist, that vibrates or pings me about my cousin’s old dog… No thanks.
When was the last time you were disconnected? Do you feel a bit stressed when your smartphone isn’t at arm’s reach? Do you feel the need to check if you got any “likes”, only 2 minutes after posting a photo? And even worst, were you disappointed that nobody took the time to comment on the photo of your daughter?
Well, maybe it’s time to rethink all of that, just as I am doing right now.
So, is Offline a new luxury?
I do think so. I believe we should all be able to go offline for a couple of days every month and remember what really matters in each of our own lives. You can always delay the things you need to do or take care of, and go check how many followers you have, but time will not wait for you. This said, I do believe the Internet is an amazing tool. It has been the one invention with the biggest positive impact on humankind and I can honestly say that without the internet and social media, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
It’s all about finding a balance.
For me, the classic watch is a perfect reminder that time is important. Real time; the time needed for me, for her and for them.
And that, my friends, is in part why I’m so excited about this project!
